Is your site losing clients? Welcome to the 'Above the Fold', SWD's new monthly newsletter. Once a month, we'll write to you to talk about whatever the 'hot' topic is. We promise that we'll only send out what we think is truly valuable insight. We'll present a problem, offer a solution and do our best to help your site be the powerhouse you deserve. Without further ado, let's begin... The 5 and 3 Rule Is your website losing you valuable clients? We use a 5 second rule to work out if your site is working. At SWD, we follow a simple rule when making our websites. We call it ‘The 5 and 3 Rule’. To maintain an agency-standard level of detail and care, it’s our internal benchmark that guides every website we design and build. We theorised the rule from observing real user behaviour: hard data shows that visitors don’t read websites line-by-line, they scan them in a matter of seconds. The rule is as follows: if your website fails to answer three questions in the first five seconds of viewing a page, it loses potential clients - no matter how impressive the aesthetics are. So, what are the three questions? Question 1: Who Are You? The visitor needs to unequivocally understand who you are. You need instant visual identity: clear logo placement and readable company branding at the forefront of the design. They need a contextual baseline - reassuring the visitor immediately that they are in the right place and dealing with a legitimate business. If a visitor doesn’t know who you are, they have no foundation of trust to build on. Think about it: if you’re looking for a service, are you willing to accept that some mysterious entity is going to provide that for you? Professionally? No, we wouldn’t either. Question 2: What Do You Do? Seems simple, right? No. The majority of people who think their homepage is clear about what they’re offering are wrong. Remember, you only get five seconds. A creative agency might get away with some cryptic ‘we bring your ideas to life’, but only just. Even so, the majority of people don’t own a creative agency. They offer services, guides, subscriptions, products and so much more that cannot be conveyed with mystery. It needs to state your core offering in plain English (if you’re an English-speaking company, of course). You need to connect what you sell to the exact problem it solves for the customer. Of course, your brand can (and deserves) its own identity. You can be playful and have fun with it, but you need to remove the jargon and internal industry buzzwords in favour of vocabulary that your target customer actually uses. So, whilst “We sell logos!” might be too plain and “We lay down your identity in ink” is too vague, you need to convey a message in your own brand identity. Something like “We design logos that position your business to win clients” might be just the kind of language your visitor needs to give them real confidence in you. Question 3: How Do I Start? The age old question. Back in the early days of online commerce, it was commonplace for a website to be unclear on how to actually start. It was accepted, even. In 2026, it’s unforgivable. If you don’t have clear visual waypoints to guide users directly to purchasing, getting in touch or booking, your site isn’t working for you. If you’ve had a site developed, edited or designed by us, you’ll have heard us use the phrase ‘primary call-to-action/cta’ a whole lot. Positioning one high-contrast, obvious action button directly in the visitors view is a fantastic way to lead their money directly to your wallet. That may sound slightly uncouth, but that’s what we’re all trying to do with our websites, really. Having actionable buttons with strong and direct labels creates a single focal point: eliminating competing buttons to avoid choice paralysis whilst still making sure your customers know the answer to the dreaded question: How do I start? The 5-Second Homepage Audit So, time to test it. Show someone your website. Someone who doesn’t know what you do and is unfamiliar with your work. Give them five seconds, then close the tab. Ask them to answer three questions: Who is ‘Your Business Name’? What does my business do? How do you get started? Hopefully, they’ll answer all three without any hesitation. Unfortunately, in the real world, this isn’t always the case. Worst case scenario, they can’t answer any of them. That’s fantastic - it gives you a chance to spot friction and identify where visual clutter or hidden text causes confusion in those critical first moments. From there, you have a great foundation of real, unbiased data to implement some immediate fixes - quick adjustments to improve conversion; simplifying headlines, sharpening those CTAs and trimming visual noise. And if your own site didn’t quite pass the 5-second test today…well, you already know who to call.
